Bulldogs Trent Barrett future, club meeting, Canterbury, Phil Gould

Canterbury Bulldogs officials have called an urgent meeting for the next 48 hours to discuss the team’s poor start to the season, as well as the future of coach Trent Barrett.

Nine’s rugby league reporter Michael Chammas broke the news on Sunday evening.

The meeting comes following the Bulldogs’ disastrous start to 2022 where they currently sit at the bottom of the table, with just two wins from 10 games.

“Breaking news out of Belmore this afternoon, club officials have confirmed they’ve called a meeting for the next 48 hours to discuss the team’s slow start to the year and the future of coach Trent Barrett,” Chammas revealed on Nine.

“The patience from some of the club’s powerbrokers is beginning to wear thin.

“This is a members’ run club and the members have been quite vocal all weekend voicing their displeasure to the directors.

“Trent Barrett is not expected to be at the meeting. Phil Gould though, he’s expected to be there.”

Barrett is currently in the second year of a three-year contract.

The meeting comes despite recent comments from the general manager of football, Gould, throwing his support behind Barrett to be the club’s long term coach.

“He will be the coach at the Bulldogs for a long time as far as I’m concerned. He’s got such a wonderful nature as a coach,” Gould said in March.

“He has great knowledge, great delivery, great communication.

Canterbury last season finished at the bottom of the ladder.

Another season without finals football would make it six-straight years, with 2016 the last time the club reached the post-season.
